Gogarty welcomes protection of education in Budget 2010

December 10 2009

Green Party Education Spokesperson Paul Gogarty TD has welcomed the protection for education as outlined in this year’s Budget.
Deputy Gogarty said: “At a time when many Government departments have suffered serious cutbacks, education has been protected to a large extent. I am glad that the Government has recognised the importance of investing in education, even during an economic downturn, as this is crucial for our economic well-being and for overall social cohesion.
“This commitment to protect education was a crucial part of the revised Programme for Government. During the negotiations the Green Party secured guarantees that education would fare better than other areas and that some cutbacks would be reversed. This year we will see additional teachers appointed at primary and second level and extra capitation funding provided in lieu of the book grants and second level amalgamated grants removed last year. Additional funding for NEPS psychologists has also been provided.
“The Green Party acknowledges that this budget is tough for everyone. Necessary, but hugely unpopular steps have been taken. We are relieved that through our intervention, education at least was spared. I believe that protecting education at a time when other areas need to be slashed is the right decision to make for our children’s future and for the future prosperity of this State,” concluded Deputy Gogarty.
