How to keep brown bins smelling clean and not attracting flies and vermin

I have raised the issue of non collection of Monday bank holiday bins due to ‘industrial relations issues’. I have also been in touch with the Council regarding non collection of brown bins due to ‘staffing issues’.

These are the big things that are concerning people at the moment regarding refuse collection. However residents have also contacted me about the foul smell being caused by their new brown bins.

Thankfully it should be possible to sort this out. Here are a few tips:

Plastic bags should not be put in brown bins and neither should ‘biodegradable bags’. However there are now also compostable bin liners from companies such as GreenSax and Killeen. These break down in commercial or home composting in 10-45 days.

Brown materials such as leaves, straw, or dry grass help to mop up wet waste in the bin. If at all possible wrap food wastes in old newspaper. If you can keep your bin in a shady area this will help to keep material fresh.
