Wednesday, 24 September 2008 14:55
To ask the Minister for Education and Science the instructions he has received from the Department of Finance regarding cutbacks in education; if he will guarantee that the weakest and most vulnerable within the system will be protected in Budget 2009 and the Estimates; and if he will make a statement on
the matter.

Minister for Education and Science (Batt O'Keeffe, T.D.)

The Deputy will appreciate that the preparation of the Estimates , which is ongoing , and which has recently been fast-tracked by the Government, is carried out on a strictly confidential basis. As such it would not be
appropriate for me to comment specifically on this matter in advance of the formal announcements involved.
