Swimming pool plans have been scrapped in Adamstown
SDCC have agreed to front load housing on foot of a request from Government meaning the library project is delayed a year or so. There’s an additional public amenity going in also down the line but the Council has scrapped plans for a swimming pool, going back on a promise given to elected reps that Adamstown residents would be consulted.
SDCC requested “flexibility” from An Bord Pleanala in terms of a pool or a similar public amenity, which the board granted. We requested they consult first so that people could choose, and this was promised, but they then reneged on that commitment.
Update from Paul December 10th 2025: When I asked the CEO about this at a meeting with TDs in December he said something along the lines of regretting the manner in which this issue was dealt with but stating that a second pool in Lucan “was never a runner”.
Myself, Cllr Helen Farrell - Ind and Liona O’Toole are extremely annoyed about this but don’t have any legal powers.
When there was a vote of Cllrs - in 2013 review of SDZ (none of us there that year) - they voted to push a swimming pool in Adamstown way down the phasing.
Now unelected officials have taken it off entirely with ABP support.
So we’ve gone from a leisure centre and gym actually being granted at the general area of the crossings in 2008 to now having no pool when the population is growing and Lucan pool will not be enough. Unless a commercial cooperation comes in that’s where it lies.
