Cycle upgrades Griffeen Road

This update 15th April. Earlier posts 1st August 2023, 31st March 2023.

I am updating this post to allow residents to access the audit report on works carried out last Autumn.

Why was an audit carried out?

Residents on local FB groups will know I've chased up these entrances multiple times from a visibility perspective for drivers and also from a safety perspective for cyclists and pedestrians. The principle is good but the works were not fit for purposes and SDDC confirmed that an independent audit would be carried out. These works were as follows:

  • Concrete overrun areas to all junctions

  • Complete centre lining between footpath and cyclepath

  • Line marking to be installed through Bottle bank entrance

  • Repair/replace existing cycle crossing points on other side of the road to Moy Glas drive and Elm Wood.

  • Verge reseeding

I requested the audit report to see what measures were proposed versus what went in and also to see the thinking behind consultant recommendations. However SDCC would not make this available until the day of this update 15th April 2024. Management had this to say:

"Over the last number of months a number of you have requested to see the completed Stage 3 Road Safety Audit for the junction improvement works that were carried out on Griffeen Road last year. I have not shared it until now as it was not fully agreed with the independent auditor but I’m glad to report that this has been fully signed off now. Please find attached the signed off RSA for these works.

"The recommendations in the report have been implemented and all works (with the exception of some line marking) are now complete."

I would gather that some residents would still not be happy with what has been amended, but I am not sure what else can be forced through. While SDCC says the entrance works were based on best practice in roads guidelines, clearly there were issues. The bottle bank remains a message and new markings will not take away from the fact that vehicles have to reverse out which is a safety issue for pedestrians and cyclists. I've posted before that we got agreement in 2021 to move the bottle banks to the swimming pool car park - something SDCC subsequently denied but something a survey of residents shows a majority still want relocated - but any chance Cllr Liona O'Toole and I had of pushing the Council on this were scuppered by other Councillors present at our meeting on the issue in November as they were happy to take a "wait and see" approach.

August 2023 update on the plan originally flagged with residents in Spring 2023 on my Facebook page and also in a leaflet drop

SDCC has carried out a survey of the condition of the cycling infrastructure in the County. It plans to carry out improvements at junctions in a small section of Lucan in 2023 as part of a series of wider works in the coming years.

The original survey presentation can be seen as a pdf document here:

Map above shows the proposed works area for 2023, which mainly covers Griffeen Road and Griffeen Way and one roundabout at Griffeen Avenue. See pdf for more details.
